Mining of silver ore at Smrkovec is known to have occurred in the 16th century (Fiala 1959); prospecting was carried out in the 18th and 19th centuries, without any significant results.
In 1917–1918, the old mine dumps apparently yielded 200 kg of bismuth, and the locality was prospected for uranium ores between 1950 and 1955.
Nowadays all mines are closed.
