The Swietokrzyski (Holy Cross) Mountains, are Poland’s oldest mountainous geological formation (and lowest, due to erosion over more than 300 million years) and one the oldest mountain ranges in Europe.
From the early Middle Ages, the mountains were a place of extensive lead, copper and iron mining till the half of the 20th century.
The Swietokrzyskie Mountains take their name, which means “Holy Cross,” and refers to a Christian relic from a nearby Benedictine monastery on Lysa Mountain, now the site of the Swietokrzyski National Park, established in 1950.
